Getting settled in

Yesterday I woke up feeling sick, and I slept half the day away. I didn't feel like eating anything, but when I woke up for lunch, Rachel made some chicken noodle soup. I ate 2 bowls of that, and Rachel said that the seminary students were having a picnic for the final day of their module of classes. Here, they have 1 class for 3 weeks straight, and then have a new class.  They baked potatoes in a dirt oven, and the cook made fish and salad. Potatoes are a very common food here. You peel the potatoes with your hands. They vary in size from a bouncy ball to a racquetball, so you can eat 5 or so. The fish was tasty. I had a small piece because this was my second lunch. And yes, it still had the head and tail. When I got back, Alicia, a girl from the seminary, was cutting old clothes into small pieces to use as stuffing for pillows. Alicia works for Rachel in the afternoons, because it is hard for seminary girls to find work. I helped cut for a while and had a "conversation" in Spanish. We talked about sports, family, and classes. They have a soccer field and a volleyball court. It's wonderful though, because I can reach over the net without jumping! People here are shorter generally. :-) I really want to play sometime! I went out to see the neighbor's kittens and guinea pigs. They are so cute! And her daughter (sounds like Milk-a said with a Spanish accent) probably 5 out so was telling me all about her baby kitties. Muy bonita! (Very cute/pretty) I took a nap after that, and later was woken up by scratching by our rat friend that was being very loud! We had dinner with Mr and Mrs Whipple. They are missionaries in Lima, and were up teaching the most recent class. We had pancakes from scratch, and they were very good! Even though I wasn't that hungry. Also, a neighbor brought some corn over. Each kernel of corn is huge, probably 3/4 in tall! I'll have to send a picture sometime. They taste kinda like chewy plastic, but they aren't bad. :-)

This morning, Rachel and I went to help Sam and Beth Rojas move. The also work in Urubamba. The help with a Christian school, and Mr Rojas is a pastor. Their oldest of 3, Bethany, comes every day and Rachel homeschools her. Mrs Rojas is expecting and sick a lot, so is happy for the help with Bethany's school. Rachel and I cleaned and partly packed the whole upstairs. Usually renters leave the house dirty, so we wanted to leave it clean to have a good testimony to those around us. We brushed off cobwebs around windows and in corners, swept, and mopped after everything was out. Everything looked a whole lot nicer when we finished.

We were both pretty hungry after working full speed all morning, so we went to drop our stuff off at home. We went to eat at a Peruvian restaurant, which was very good. I had chicken soup and then sauteed onions and peppers with beef and french fries and rice. The French fries are thick and maybe fried, but not greasy. Like cooked potato hunks. The flavoring was very good and the portions were huge! I think it was 13 soles (generally 3 soles to 1 dollar) so less than $5. I'm eating the rest for dinner.

I stayed here to get a bit of rest, and Rachel went back to clean. Which is why I'm writing this now. She will be pretty tired when she gets back, so tonight will be a relaxing evening. Tomorrow is church. (Wednesday is Awana) that will be good. I would put some pictures on, but the new big memory card isn't downloading properly, but I can get more/show you later. Hope you all are doing well! Thanks for for thoughts and prayers!

I arrived!

Everything went smoothly with my flights, and I arrived in Cusco at 7:10am. The first flight from Orlando to Panama was a bit nerve racking with about an hour of turbulence. (And I was nervous in general :) it was a bit rainy when I landed, but it was neat to see all the ships around land. I easily got to my gate and tried to get internet to tell my family I was OK, but that didn't work. Both flights with copa were very nice, and I had a whole row to myself. All the first set of directions were in Spanish, so then I worked to understand the Hispanic person speaking English. I tried to sleep in the flight, but without success. From Tuesday morning to Thursday night late, I had 5 hours of sleep. (Probably why I feel sick and tired today...)

I got to Lima fine, and headed to migrations. I waited in a huge line which split into several smaller lines. I choose the wrong line! My person got done with 5 by the time the girl next to us got done with 30. I was worried that my baggage wasn't there, but I got through, got my luggage, and got through customs. I filled out Spanish forms on the plane, and I guess they were good, because no one made a fuss. I ended up waiting in a cafe. It was nice except I asked for water in a glass, and he gave me water with gas (carbonated water) which is disgusting! I went to check in early because I wanted to make sure I didn't have any problems with my bags or ticket. People started lining up early all in scarves and jackets. It was going to be cold evidently.

I got to Cusco and I could see my breath. It warms up to the perfect temperature though in the middle of the day. (That isn't cold because Rachel said that going to Punto is called "penguin practice"... By a native of Punto... Oh boy, I'm from Florida. :-\ she said she counted 7 layers of shirts on one person :-) Cusco is their big town an hour and a half away, so I got to see that while they did some errands. Wendy Campbell, another missionary that works in Urubamba, was along so I got to meet her. There is such variety in dress... From modern, to ladies that hold their children in colored blankets, wear the hats braids and sweaters. The driving is interesting. (Not as bad as the Dominican republic though.) Honking is a part of driving, and people and small children walk straight across the street all the time. There are human stoplights in busy intersections that dust the traffic. Once everything was finished in Cusco, we started driving back. Urubamba is very rural and in a very mountainous part of Peru. You could see donkeys, sheep, cows and other animals grazing asking the road (and there are dogs like crazy!) Whole families out on their farm hand threshing their crops. The young children, like 5, are responsible for herding 30 some cows. It is soooo beautiful. I'm living in a postcard. Urubamba is the valley and is surrounded by mountains. You can see the glaciers! Wow! It's pretty awesome.

I got a shower because I felt dirty from flying all day. Here, you choose from heat or water pressure, not both! And it's 55 or so inside in the evenings... Yeah... We had grilled cheese for dinner and pineapple, and then after that, a seminary graduate, Sonya, came over and we talked. Rachel translated, but the conversation flowed nicely and it was fun! I got ready for bed, and then Rachel pointed out that we have a furry foe in our roof that scampers around a lot! It's a metal roof with styrafoam under it, and you can hear the rat/mouse digging. Delightful. I took a nap today (Friday) and it was what woke me up. I thought it was Rachel's dog Molly at the door it was that loud. Rachel had 3 dogs, Molly (white with curly ears and kinda small) Guess (German shepherd looking and huge, but very nice), and Cockie (brown and white but doesn't come around much)

Well, there is my flight and first day in a nutshell. I can't figure out how to arrange pictures, so they are in a weird order, but you get the picture. :-)  thanks for your prayers. Sooo thankful I made it safely!!!

...That my Children Walk in Truth!

Yesterday, my church family joined in prayer for me as I go this summer.  A few people and my dad prayed for me, for my safety, and for the hearts that I would touch this summer.  My goal is not only to make my family and parents proud, (who I want to please) but also to bring my heavenly Father joy. The days are quickly going by and I'll soon be in Peru!

Me and my daddy! <3

Clermont Baptist Spring Banquet

The teen banquet is always a highlight of the year! This year, May 9th, we went to Legends to eat, take pictures, and watch the year end slideshow. I'm so thankful for all of the godly friends He has put in my life. You all mean a lot! I'm going to miss you all so much this summer, but Lord willing, I'll be back. ☺

All the pretty girls... Inside and out!

Good buddies.
